Origins of the Wolfington family and the auto business date back to horse-drawn carriages

The Wolfington family's journey in the car business began with Alexander J. Wolfington, a blacksmith who founded a successful carriage-building firm in Philadelphia in 1876, specializing in the popular Brougham. The company, Alexander Wolfington & Son, transitioned into the automotive era under Alexander's son, Harry J. Wolfington, custom-building early horseless carriage bodies and coining the term "convertible" for seasonal body swaps. Over time, the business shifted to commercial and professional vehicles, including buses, hearses, and ambulances, eventually becoming Wolfington Body Company, a major distributor of specialty vehicles. Separately, a branch of the family established a successful metropolitan auto dealer group, ensuring continuous family presence in the transportation sector from the carriage to the modern automobile.
